According to the wiki, MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park is a protected area of the Philippines that commemorates the historic landing of General Douglas MacArthur in Leyte Gulf at the start of the campaign to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation on 20 October 1944.

How to Get to Macarthur Memorial Park

OPTION 1 (BY JEEPNEY)

Entry Point is in TACLOBAN AIRPORT.

  • From the airport, take a jeepney going to downtown Tacloban with signboard ‘Downtown’ then drop at the Coca-Cola plant at the intersection of the road from the airport and the main highway going to the city center. Fare is about PHP 10 ( SGD 0.25 ,$0.2, € 0.17) . You don’t need to go to the city center.
  • From here (Coca-Cola), you can ride jeepney going to Palo with signboard ‘Palo’ or ‘Tanauan’ or ‘Tolosa’ then drop at the intersection near the downtown of Palo. Fare is about PHP 8 ( SGD 0.2 ,$0.15, € 0.12) .
  • From here, you can take a tricycle going to McArthur Park. The fare is about PHP 30 ( SGD 0.2 ,$0.15, € 0.12) for special ride or PHP 8 ( SGD 0.2 ,$0.15, € 0.12) .

There is however a jeepney operating from Tacloban-McArthur Park but the terminal is in the downtown not at the airport. The route of the jeepney that operates directly is not at the main highway but at the diversion road, you might get lost your way.

OPTION 2 (BY HAILING A PRIVATE JEEPNEY/TAXI)

  • At the airport, try to hail a taxi or a special jeepney. Fare is more or less PHP 400 ( SGD 10 ,$ 8, € 6.7) .

OPTION 3 (BY CAR/GRAB)

Exact Location:  Palo, Leyte Province, Philippines

Search for ‘ MacArthur Memorial Park’ via Waze or Google Maps. (It is a wee-bit expensive).

Macarthur Memorial Park is a must-visit historical place when one is in Tacloban City. One of the most poignant moments of World War II was the evacuation of Gen. Douglas MacArthur from Corregidor in Manila Bay. At his departure, he famously promised “I Shall Return” This park marks the spot where MacArthur and Philippine President Omesna came ashore when the invasion to retake the Philippines from the Japanese began on October 20, 1944.

A site where Gen. Douglas McArthur landed on October 20, 1944, to liberate the Philippines from Japanese forces.

The statues are placed at the center of the park. They were medium-sized ones. You really can’t take photos near it because it is surrounded by water and is prohibited.

It is also a great place for a stroll and even a picnic. What’s new is they put up a light fountain show thing at night and more attractions here. This is truly a great leap forward. Good job Palo!

The park is located in the village of Palo, about five kilometers south of the City of Tacloban. Also located in the park is the Japanese Flame of Peace memorial dedicated to the people of Philippine people by the Japanese government following the end of the war.
