Want to avail Starlink for the first time? This detailed and curated guide will make it easy for you to navigate the exchange, save money, and maximize your time.

SpaceX’s Starlink, the broadband internet system led by Elon Musk, has unveiled plans to introduce mobile services in 2024. This announcement coincides with the recent launch of the Starlink Direct to Cell website, located at direct.starlink.com. The website outlines a timeline for service offerings, starting with text messaging in 2024, followed by voice and data services in the subsequent year, and Internet of Things (IoT) functions in 2026.

SpaceX had previously joined forces with T-Mobile to provide cell services in areas lacking coverage, using Starlink’s satellites as space-based cell towers. In contrast to Apple’s “Emergency SOS” service introduced in 2022, which is limited to dead zones, SpaceX’s Starlink satellite-powered messaging services require no special apps or device changes. This seamless access to text, voice, and data is made possible through updates to Starlink satellites.

One key advantage is that Starlink’s satellites orbit closer to Earth at 550km compared to those of other companies, enhancing user connectivity. Although the specific service speed is not detailed on the Starlink website, SpaceX had previously announced speeds of 2 to 4Mbps, sufficient for web browsing and messaging through popular apps like WhatsApp, Skype, and iMessage.

Starlink has also established partnerships with mobile carriers worldwide, including Optus in Australia, Rogers in Canada, and KDDI in Japan, with further expansions expected upon service launch. In the Philippines, Starlink has been providing internet services to all regions, except Metro Manila, since February 2023.
