How to Get to Mt. Malingatong

OPTION 1 (BY JEEPNEY/MULTICAB)

Entry Point is in ORMOC PORT.

CHECK FAST CRAFT SCHEDULE & FARE HERE

  • From the port, walk to Ormoc City Terminal near the Ormoc Public Market/2go Express ticketing.
  • Then, ride a jeepney/multicab bound for Lake Danao. Be sure to inform the driver that you will hop off at Jump off Point at Brgy. Cabintan. Fare is PHP 30 ( SGD$ 0.75 ,US$ 0.6, € 0.5). Travel time is about 20 minutes.
  • From there, you can meet local guides that offer to take you along the trail up to the peak. 

(HOMEBOUND)

  • Wait for a jeepney/multicab in the area or ride a habal-habal.
  • Note: Multi-cabs are available for a certain period of time so you can wait for multi-cabs.

OPTION 2 (BY BOAT W/ BUS/VAN)

Entry Point is in CEBU PIER 4 via HILONGOS

  • From Pier 4, ride the Slow Boats (Roble Shipping Lines or Gabisan Lines) & Fast Boat (MV Superjoy) bound for Hilongos. Fare is about PHP 310.00 ( SGD$ 6.89, US$ 6.2, € 5.17) – PHP 2,000.00 ( SGD$ 44.45, US$ 40, € 33.33) for Slow Boats and PHP 550.00 ( SGD$ 12.23, US$ 11, € 9.17) for Fast Boats/Crafts. Travel Time is about 5-6 hours for the slow boats and 2-3 hours for the fast boat.
  • Then walk or ride a motorcycle to Hilongos Public Terminal.
  • At the Market, ride a bus/van to Ormoc. Travel Time is about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Fare is PHP 200.00 – PHP 350.00 ( SGD$ 5.00 ,US$ 4.0, € 3.33) – ( SGD$ 8.75 ,US$ 7.0, € 5.83).
  • Once you reached Ormoc Terminal, ride a jeepney/multicab bound for Lake Danao.
  • Be sure to inform the driver that you will hop off at Jump off Point at Brgy. Cabintan. Fare is PHP 30 ( SGD$ 0.75 ,US$ 0.6, € 0.5). Travel time is about 20 minutes.
  • From there, you can meet local guides that offer to take you along the trail up to the peak. 

(HOMEBOUND)

  • Wait for any bus/van in the area or ride a habal-habal/motorcycle.
  • Note: You can arrange for your motorcycle driver to wait for you so that you won’t have a hard time going out of the area.

OPTION 3 (BY BOAT W/ BUS/VAN)

Entry Point is in CEBU PIER 4 via BAYBAY.

  • From Pier 4, ride the Slow Boats (RORO Ferries) & Fast Boat (MV Superjoy) bound for Hilongos. Fare is about PHP 310.00 ( SGD$ 6.89, US$ 6.2, € 5.17) – PHP 2,000.00 ( SGD$ 44.45, US$ 40, € 33.33) for Slow Boats and PHP 580.00 ( SGD$ 12.89, US$ 11.6, € 9.67) for Fast Boats/Crafts. Travel Time is about 5-6 hours for the slow boats and 2-3 hours for the fast boat.
  • Then walk to Baybay Transportation Terminal.
  • At the terminal, ride a VAN/BUS bound for Ormoc. Fare is PHP 200.00 – PHP 350.00 ( SGD$ 5.00 ,US$ 4.0, € 3.33) – ( SGD$ 8.75 ,US$ 7.0, € 5.83) . Travel time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  • Once you reached Ormoc Terminal, ride a jeepney/multicab bound for Lake Danao.

  • From Pier 1, ride the Slow Boat bound (Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Inc. and Roble Shipping Lines, Inc) or From Pier 3, ride the Fast Craft (Oceanjet or 2Go) for Ormoc. Fare is about PHP 500.00 ( SGD$ 12.5, US$ 10, € 8.33) for Slow Boats and PHP 1100.00 ( SGD$ 27.5, US$ 22, € 18.33) for Fast Boats/Crafts. Travel Time is about 5-6 hours for the slow boats and 2-3 hours for the fast boat.

OPTION 5 (BY AIRPLANE & BUS/VAN) (From Cebu or Manila)

  • There are actually daily flights from Manila to Tacloban and Cebu to Tacloban. The flight takes at least an hour and twenty (20) minutes if your entry point is Manila. Air travel takes about forty-five (45) minutes or less if your entry point is Cebu.
  • After arriving at Tacloban Domestic Airport (San Jose, Tacloban City), go to Tacloban City Bus Terminal via taxicab or transfer service. 
  • From Tacloban City Bus Terminal, one can easily go to the Ormoc by taking a three-hour bus or van ride bound for Ormoc.
  • Once you reached Ormoc Terminal, ride a jeepney/multicab bound for Lake Danao.
  • Be sure to inform the driver that you will hop off at Jump off Point at Brgy. Cabintan. Fare is PHP 30 ( SGD$ 0.75 ,US$ 0.6, € 0.5). Travel time is about 20 minutes.

Mount Malingatong is located in Barangay Cabintan in Ormoc, Leyte, and rises to a height of 1205 MASL.

Mt. Malingatong is the new addition to the beautiful mountains in barangay Cabintan, Ormoc City, home to the famous Alto Peak and Lake Janagdan.

One of the three water bodies in Ormoc that attracts tourists is the lake. The others are the bigger Lake Danao (700 MASL) and the less-known Lake Kasudsuran (820 MASL).

The path becomes increasingly challenging as one approaches Alto Peak, with the surroundings covered in slick roots and steep ascents that occasionally reach an angle of up to 80–90 degrees. Certainly, the terrain isn’t getting any easier.

Mt. Malingatong Summit is 1205 miles above sea level (MASL) as measured by an altimeter watch of one of the first summit conquerors. Its view deck, 1075 MASL, can be reached in less than 2 hours. It is the perfect spot to witness the highest peak in Leyte, Alto Peak, from its foot to its peak which is perfectly situated in the backdrop.

The peak is a beauty to behold with surrounding fresh green trees and vegetation, and a calm and serene atmosphere.

Be prepared, for 2-3 hours of trekking/hiking to Mt. Malingatong.

There are many other things to do while in Ormoc. Besides Mt. Malingatong.

They do not sell any food or drinks in the area so you might bring your own. You might need this one, especially on a hot sunny day.

How much are the Entrance Fee and Other Noted Fees?

  • Registration Fee: Php 25.00
  • Guide Fee: Php 300.00 for one day tour, Php 500.00 for overnight
  • No corkage fee on food but there is a charge for use of big tables at Php 150.00 and Php 100.00 for the small tables.

Opening and Closing Time?

  1. Everyday:
    • 6:00 AM to 02:00 PM 
  2. NOTE: Local tourism only welcomes guests until 2 PM for safety purposes.

Available and is FREE. You just need to park your car beside the road.

TIPS, NOTES, AND REMINDERS

  • Traveling solo or with a partner? There are habal-habal rides that can take you to Barangay Cabintan for about PHP 200 per person and per way (Not sure about the rate, though).
  • Practice the LEAVE NO TRACE principles.
  • Pack at least 3 liters of water.
  • There’s water source and a waterfall near the campsite.
  • Bring trail food/snacks.
  • Bring ION drinks like Gatorade or Pocari Sweat.
  • Wear trekking shoes or sandals with great traction.
  • Pack a tent.
  • Pack a cook set, and cook your food.
  • Pack full-fingered gloves, leggings, and arm guards.
  • Use your legs, when using the ropes. You’ll be swaying from side to side if you don’t use them.
  • Only Smart has a stable mobile signal in Barangay Cabintan.
  • Do some preparation climbs, before hiking Alto Peak, to improve your endurance as well as enhance your confidence.
  • You may also camp at Heaven’s Peak for PHP 100 per night. You can take a shower there, for PHP 25.
  • You can also take a day hike to Alto Peak, if you’re short on time. However, you’re not going to see Lake Janagdan if you take the day hike option.
